It’s time to talk about sexual harm in the workplace

Jun 21, 2021

Shine’s Holly Carrington and Marg Fitzgibbon travelled to Hamilton to be part of this ground-breaking Summit hosted by Tautoko Mai on Monday June 14th. While the focus of this Summit on June 14th was sexual harm in the workplace, domestic violence was also frequently discussed, as there is so much overlap and many parallels between the two issues.

The Summit was MC’d by Ali Mau (#metoo Stuff journalist), and opened by Hon Marama Davidson, Minister for the Prevention of Family & Sexual Violence. Speakers included Eleanor Butterworth talking about her work to prevent family and sexual violence within NZ Rugby, Rachel Harrison and Mel Calvesbert talking about their work in the screen and music industries to prevent sexual harm, and Dr Natalie Thorburn and Cleo Arathoon from Women’s Refuge talking about the impact of domestic violence on the workplace.

Pictured here are Holly and Marg alongside Judy O’Brien and Fiona McNamara from RespectEd Aotearoa at their neighbouring stall. DVFREE and RespectEd Aotearoa have developed and delivered joint family violence and sexual violence training for Ministry of Justice customer-facing staff across the country over the last couple years and are in the early stages of creating a joint workplace service offering.
